Remembering Lucas

A stroll down memory lane would not be complete without 1986’s Lucas, which I loved then (and now) for its sweetness and honesty, not to mention the stars–Corey Haim and Charlie Sheen.
While Haim played an awkward, dorky boy (Lucas) to Sheen’s football-quarterback-Mr. Popular-Big-Man-On-Campus ”Cappie”, I adored the fact that Cappie wasn’t too cool to stick up for Lucas, and that Lucas wasn’t too dorky not to have a secret admirer (Rina, played by a very young Winona Ryder).
Lucas also starred Courtney Thorne-Smith and Kerry Green, and while Green played the leading love interest with both openness and sincerity, it is Thorne-Smith who has gone on to star in her own television show, while Green has merely had a bit part here and there.
Then there are the boys–both Haim and Sheen have had their share of personal struggles, but while Sheen has managed to make lemons into lemonade, Haim hasn’t made it past lemon peels at this point.
Insider Tip: When viewing Lucas, be sure to watch for a bit part played by one of my favorite actors, Jeremy Piven.
Lucas was written and directed by David Seltzer, who also wrote Punchline (1988), Bird on a Wire (1990), and The Omen (2006). Personally, I think he peaked with Lucas.
